Why do I have to reactivate my card?

This takes a bit of a technical explanation, but since you clicked this question, you’re probably curious! Here’s our best attempt to make it simple:

Your bank card—which you might just call your “Visa card”—is actually connected to two different payment systems: BankAxept and Visa. BankAxept is the shared payment system used by all Norwegian banks. In Norway, 9 out of 10 card payments in stores go through BankAxept, not Visa.

When we first launched tap to pay in December 2024, it worked with BankAxept. This means that if you tried to tap at a terminal that only accepts Visa (and not BankAxept), your Vipps tap card didn’t have a “system to talk to,” so it didn’t work.

Now, our agreement with Visa is finally in place! But Vipps isn’t allowed to update your card without your permission. That’s why you need to go into Vipps and reactivate your card—so it can work with both Visa and BankAxept🧡
