I'm having trouble with card payments

Trouble with card payments? Here are some things to check:

  • App version: Make sure that you’re using the latest version of the app.
  • Device: Only mobile phones (not tablets) with NFC can accept card payments.
  • Supported cards: Only Visa and Mastercard are accepted.
  • Business type: Some specific businesses (like software shops, antiques dealer, betting company, crowdfunding or donor organisations) can’t use card payments.
  • Internet: Card payments won’t work unless your device is connected to the internet.
  • Phone calls: It's not possible to take payments during a phone call.
  • App open: The app must be open and on-screen with nothing covering it.

Device-specific tips:

  • iPhone: You need iPhone XS or newer, with a passcode enabled. Recording or taking screenshots during a payment won’t work.
  • Android: Use Android 12 or newer. Remove phone covers if NFC isn’t working, and place the card as shown. Turn off full-screen/gesture navigation and developer options. Unfortunately, card payments do not work on Google Pixel phones.

Card payment restrictions

Card payments are not available for all types of businesses and sales activities. Certain industries and types of goods or services are subject to restrictions due to factors such as increased financial risk, industry-specific requirements, regulatory obligations, or requirements from our card payment partners.

As a result, some MCC (Merchant Category Code) classifications and business types cannot use card payments in Mobile Point-of-sale and Get Paid.

Restricted MCC codes include:

  • MCC 8398 – Charitable organizations
  • MCC 5912 – Drug Stores & Pharmacies
  • MCC 5122 – Drugs / Drug Proprietaries / Druggist Sundries
  • MCC 5993 – Tobacconists / Cigar Stores
  • MCC 5967 and MCC 7841 – Adult content
  • MCC 7995 – Betting / Gambling
  • MCC 4816 – Computer Network and Information Services (Cyberlockers and file sharing only)
  • MCC 7273 – Dating services
  • MCC 5966 and MCC 5967 – Telemarketing
  • MCC 5921 – Liquor stores

Restricted business types include:

  • Software shops
  • Antiques dealers
  • Betting companies
  • Crowdfunding
